The partnership is a mechanism that allows to provide technical and financial assistance for the creation and strengthening of Water Funds. It provides support to local stakeholders to implement them, contributing to establish the management structure for each fund.
It also provides advice and technical expertise that can strengthen the operation of the funds, and also facilitate the exchange of experiences and best practices among Water Funds and other stakeholders.
Water Funds is an innovative model of long-term conservation that operates through investments that are focused on a single fund. The resources generated are assigned to preserve the essential lands above watersheds through conservation actions.
The geographical location, the varied topography and the climate regime that characterizes the Colombian territory has determined that it possesses one of the largest water offers of the planet, but this offer is not distributed evenly throughout the country, and is subject to strong variations determining the availability of water resources.
The water wealth of the country is reflected in its extensive surface of fluvial networks that covers the country in favorable groundwater storage conditions, the existence of lentic water bodies and the presence of huge tracts of wetlands. The presence of high mountains, abundant rainfall, vast savannas and rainforests, along with its strategic location, characterize this national territory and determine the existence of ecosystems as valuable water potential and complex regulatory systems. However, this water potential is restricted in its use by a number of anthropogenic factors that have effects on the hydrological cycle and in particular in the water quality. It is also affected by the way it is used that is characterized as inadequate and inefficient.
